Steyn City School is an independent school that is
o ering a world-class education. We shall be
accomodating students from Grades 000 to 12 in
2021.
How do we prepare children for a changing world?
For a start, by accepting that an education system that
places emphasis on content above all else isn’t
appropriate - not when the internet makes information
of all sorts available within seconds. What matters
now is entrenching values and building skills such as
creativity, collaboration, curiosity, agility, and
innovation. Skills, which can be applied across an
endless sectrum of content, are vital if students are to
succeed.
Steyn City School is more than a platform where
individuals excel; it’s also a space where they are
encouraged to question and take initiative. This
relates to the sports eld, performance areas, and the
classrooms. Our outstanding facilities invite children
to participate in several sporting codes, and our ethos
and values stand as a guideline to nurture good
sportsmanship.
Added to this, we o er a cultural programme where
self-expression is encouraged and applauded. We take
pride in providing our children with a safe space for
exploring their own strenghts and stretching their
boundaries. By providing various testing grounds for
talent, we believe that we are also providing the
building blocks of self-esteem - and this, in turn, is the
quality that helps our children respond to those
around them with compassion and respect, while
maintaining their own integrity.
EARLY YEARS CENTRE & FOUNDATION PHASE
In our Early Years Centre (Grades 000 to 0) and

Foundation Phase (Grades 1 to 3) the class teachers are
responsible for teaching the curriculum, including the
core subjects, while specialist teachers take
responsibility for IsiZulu, Afrikaans, Music, Art,
Information Technology, Media Studies, and Physical
Education.
PREPARATORY SCHOOL
In Grade 4, lessons in English, Life Orientation,
Mathematics, Geography and History (Social Studies),
and the Natural Sciences are taught by the class
teacher, while IsiZulu, Afrikaans, Music, Visual Arts,
Information Technology, Dramatic Arts, and Physical
Education are taught by specialist teachers. In Grade 5,
Natural Sciences classes are added to the subjects
taught by specialists. Students are able to select either
IsiZulu or Afrikaans as their First Additional Language.
From Grade 6, all classes are taught by specialists.
Grade 7 students add Economic Management Sciences
to their curriculum.
COLLEGE
In the College, students are taught by specialist
teachers in all subjects. From Grade 10, students are
required to take four compulsory subjects. These are
English, Afrikaans or IsiZulu First Additional Language,
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and Life
Orientation (including Physical Education). They may
then select three electives from Life Sciences, Physical
Sciences, Information Technology, Engineering,
Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Dramatic
Arts, Visual Arts, Accounting, and Business Studies.
Students who hold a First Additional Language
exemption are required to select an additional elective.
Advanced Programme Mathematics is o ered as an
Steyn City School follows the national curriculum and will write
the Independent Examination Board (IEB) examinations at the
Senior Certi cate Level.
TECHNOLOGY
The Hive in the Preparatory School and The Hub in the College are
our media and technology centres. Here the students not only have
access to thousands of books, but are also able to participate in
programming, virtual reality technology, Minecra , and Robotics as
an integral part of the Technology curriculum.
Our teachers incorporate this technology into their lessons at
appropriate levels and it forms an integrated part of the curriculum.
Those who want to dive into this world of technology at a deeper
level can enjoy these programs a er school as part of their
co-curricular activities.
Steyn City School is excited to be part of a Microso Case Study
and to have Microso Showcase Status.
SPORT
Our school philosophy places heavy emphasis on sport and physical
activity to achieve a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle. With this in
mind, we o er excellent facilities, along with a team of specialized
coaches headed by the Deputy Head in charge of Co-Curricular
Activities.
Students are able to participate in cricket, football, netball,
tennis, golf, touch rugby, sevens rugby, equestrian sports, trail
running, and mountain biking. The indoor Aquatic Centre, where
students are able to compete in swimming and water polo in a
heated pool, includes a Learn-to-Swim Pool for those who are still
building their con dence in the water, while the AstroTurf provides a
world-class hockey facility. Physical Education lessons are designed
to allow students to master a variety of skills.
We also o er various sports clinics in the holidays and a number
of academies o er individualized coaching at our facilities.
SERVICE
Steyn City School partners with the Lesedi Trust to support their
Saturday School Programme. Our School is a satellite campus for the
Lesedi Trust and our senior students are required to participate in
service activities during their College years.
ART & CULTURE
In a world where science increasingly takes centre stage, the arts
remain crucial for teaching us what it means to be human. Our
co-curricular programme encourages students to express themselves
through music, drama, and art, while The Hive and The Hub have
been developed as venues where they can practise their making,
breaking, investigative, technological, and creative skills.
Music forms part of the curriculum from Grade 000. Students
sing, play instruments, and learn to read music. Steyn City School
o ers choir, a variety of vocal groups, marimbas, and djembe drums.
Individual music lessons in piano, violin, guitar, percussion, and
voice are also on o er and can be arranged through the Music
Department.
