MARKET DAY
CORNWALL COMMUNITY
GOES TO MARKET BY ANGELIQUE LESSING
IMAGES BY TESSA DE WET
n 28 November 2020, after days
of rain and under grey clouds
and a few drizzles, a holiday
Omarket was held in the park
at the post boxes. This was the work of the
communications and marketing committee,
in conjunction with estate management.
The concept behind the market was to
embody the idea of community. By bringing
Cornwall Hill residents together for a fun-
filled day, to support small businesses in the
estate and to participate in fund raising for
the Wollies Animal Shelter, the committee’s
goal was to continue the positive
community spirit that started during the
Covid lockdown.
A variety of vendors participated on the
day, with a total of fifteen stalls selling
everything from fresh vegetables to
educational toys, books and delicious rusks
and treats.
As well as dog and cat food donations, the
sum of R4 000 was raised though photo
competition and doggy walk entries, cash
donations and stall fees for the day.
Wollies started in 2003 from humble
beginnings, with the initial purpose of
sterilising as many animals as possible,
because they strongly believe that if people
are educated on the benefits of sterilisation
and if the costs were more affordable, then
there would be fewer abandoned, abused
and homeless animals. As they grew, Wollies
started helping abandoned, neglected
and abused animals and over time this
evolved into the full-scale operation which
it is today. They registered as a non-profit,
pro-life organisation and officially opened
Wollies Animal Shelter on 29 May 2013. To
date, Wollies has expanded considerably
and is home to nearly 1 000 homeless dogs
and cats.
