THE BIG PICTURE
OBERAMMERGAU, GERMANY
Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany is famous for the Passion Play that
has been held every 10 years since 1633. The story goes that during the
17th century plague a worker broke the quarantine to go and work in a
nearby village. When he returned he brought the plague with him and
about 84 inhabitants died. As in many other villages the good burgers of
Oberammergau made a vow to God that if he would spare the village they
would perform the Passion Play in his honour and from then on no more
inhabitants died. Almost half the village of 5000 inhabitans are involved in the
play including children and animals. The play was cancelled due to covid in
2020 but its on schedule for 2022.
