THE BIG PICTURE
WHITE-THROATED SWALLOW
Hirundo albilinea
AFR: WITKEELSWAEL
The White-throated Swallow is distinguished by its
glossy blue-black upper parts and pure white under
parts, including a prominent white throat. They
are adept aerial insectivores, pursuing insects on
the wing with their agile flight. They construct cup-
shaped nests from mud pellets, often attached to
vertical surfaces such as cliffs, buildings, or under
bridges, frequently near water. They are primarily
resident in Southern Africa, with some local
movement. Their diet consists almost entirely of
insects taken in flight.
