PRECINCT LIVING
LOCAL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES DURING
MANDELA MONTH
There’s no doubt that the
third wave of the COVID
pandemic has hit us a lot
harder and many people
are struggling to weather
the storm. However, in
addition to protecting
our physical health,
we must safeguard our
mental health. What
better way to do that and
stay connected than by
joining hands (virtually,
of course), and helping
those less fortunate?
67 BLANKETS FOR
MANDELA DAY
Launched in December 2013,
the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day
initiative, under the guidance of
founder Carolyn Steyn, is still going
strong. To drum up enthusiasm and
encourage the ‘knitwits’ who have
joined the drive and have supported
the spirit of giving in tribute to Nelson
Mandela, the 67 Blankets movement
has taken on some amazing world
record-breaking challenges – the
world’s largest blanket and the
world’s longest scarf, amongst
others. And in June this year,
they showcased the 2021 Bokke
Stronger Together Blanket on the
Steyn City School’s rugby field.
After each of these challenges,
once unveiled, the knitted or
crocheted sections were split
apart, sanitised and baled up for
sending to a wide variety of welfare
organisations and communities.
There’s always a need for blankets,
whether knitted or crocheted, so
if you enjoy using your hands and
have nimble fingers, get some
knitwit tools and wool and get
working.
