        Early morning cruise

passengers but fortunately for us, Sue
sat in front next to the pilot and I had
the whole of the back seat to myself.
        The helicopter lifted off smoothly
and proceeded to the falls which we
reached within two minutes. We flew
at an estimated fifteen hundred feet
and could see the entire 1,7 km length
of the falls, and the clouds of spray
that give the falls their local name
        of Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that
        thunders. The helicopter circled round
three times, enabling fine views of
the river upstream, the islands in the
river and the gorge below the falls.
Being August, the river was not in full
flow but nevertheless the flight was
        unforgettable.

The lodge staff also booked us a lunch
at the Lookout Café situated above
the gorge below the falls. Two zip lines
stretched across the gorge and thrill
seekers could be seen hurtling across
on the wires. Prices at the café were
quoted in US dollars but tips were
gratefully accepted by the waitrons in
        any currency.
Later that afternoon, Vusa took us on
a guided walking tour of the falls. The
        entrance fee for international visitors
to the falls is USD50. As we had
pre-booked the tour via the lodge,
                                         David Livingstone's statue
