to the battle and overlooks the River
Plate estuary. Later that evening all
the passengers were invited to the
magnificent Theatre Solis built in 1856 to
attend an extravaganza show performed
by the local theatre company.
The next three days were spent at sea
on our way to the Falkland Islands. From
the open bar area on deck nine at the
back of the ship, we observed many sea
birds which seemed to be attracted by
the ship’s wake. Birds seen included
Wandering, Black Browed and Royal
Albatross, White Chinned and Spectacled
Petrel, Southern Giant Petrel and Cory,
and Great Shearwater. We chatted often
about the birdlife to TV wildlife presenter
Nigel Marven who is a frequent lecturer
on Azamara. He presented a number
of interesting and often very amusing
clips from his numerous TV shows and
interviews with Jonathan Ross and Jay
Leno.
As Port Stanley in the Falklands does
not have a deepwater jetty, the ship
anchored off shore and the life boats
were lowered to ferry passengers from
the ship to the town. The total population
of the Falklands is 3500, of which some
3000 live in Stanley on East Falkland and
only 500 live on West Falkland. The town
of Stanley stretches some 5km along the
shoreline but is only six streets deep. We
took a nature walk with a local guide and
saw numerous birds including Megallanic
Penguins, Blackish and Megallanic Oyster One of the numerous parks in Buenos Aires
