DE KRANS
WINE
TASTING
n 24 April 2024, the De Krans Wine
Cellar wines were presented to
us by Boets Nel, co-owner and
OManaging Director of the estate.
De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the
upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka
River Valley in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo.
The farm’s history dates back to 1890 when
the Nel family bought it. Since 1985, most
classic Portuguese port and wine varieties
have been planted. De Krans is widely
known as one of the leading port-style wine
producers and one of the most innovative
cellars in South Africa.
The cellar has won over 700 medals and
awards (including multiple Veritas and
Michelangelo double gold and gold awards)
in the past 30 years. It has been crowned
Champion Private Wine Cellar in the Klein
Karoo region six times in the last seven years.
De Krans is known not only for its award-
winning port-style wines but also for its
unique, high-quality red and white wines
from Portuguese grape varieties.
We were welcomed with the De Krans P & T
(Port-style tonic cocktail), which everyone
received very well. After that, we were treated
to the De Krans Free-Run Chenin Blanc,
Pinotage Rosé, Basket Press Cabernet, and
Touriga Nacional. We ended the evening
with two of their specialities – the De Krans
Cape Tawny and the De Krans Cape Vintage,
which is widely regarded as one of the best
port-style wines in South Africa. All the guests
thoroughly enjoyed the wines, and Boets was
the most entertaining presenter.
The Gardens Bistro provided a superb
meal and a wonderful evening. If you find
yourselves in the Calitzdorp area, it’s worth
stopping at De Krans Wine Cellar to enjoy
their wines and a meal in their Bistro.
