PESTICIDES VS HERBICIDES:
understanding their role in landscaping
n landscaping, maintaining healthy and
visually appealing green spaces often requires
managing pests and unwanted plant growth.
ITwo common chemical tools used for this
purpose are pesticides and herbicides. While
both contribute to plant health and landscape
maintenance, they serve distinct functions.
What are pesticides?
Pesticides are a broad category of chemicals
designed to control or eliminate pests, including
insects, fungi, rodents, and bacteria that can
damage plants. They include:
• Insecticides – Target insects such as aphids,
caterpillars, and beetles.
• Fungicides – Prevent fungal diseases like
powdery mildew and root rot.
• Rodenticides – Control rodents that may
damage plants or infrastructure.
In landscaping, pesticides are used to protect
lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees from harmful
infestations that could weaken plant health and
reduce aesthetic appeal.
What are herbicides?
Herbicides, a subset of pesticides, are specifically
designed to control unwanted plants, commonly
referred to as weeds. They fall into two main
categories:
• Selective herbicides – Target specific weeds
without harming desirable plants (broadleaf
species vs grasses).
• Non-selective herbicides – Kill all plant life
in the area, often used for clearing unwanted
vegetation.
Herbicides help prevent weeds from competing
with plants for nutrients, sunlight and water,
ensuring a well-manicured landscape.
Using pesticides and herbicides responsibly
While these chemicals are effective, improper use
can harm the environment, beneficial insects,
and even human health. Life Green Group
applies them carefully, following manufacturer
instructions, using organic alternatives when
possible, and integrating sustainable landscaping
practices like mulching and crop rotation.
Understanding the differences between
pesticides and herbicides helps landscapers and
property owners make informed decisions to
maintain thriving and beautiful outdoor spaces
while minimising environmental impact.
