t the end of last year, Sue and I spent six weeks touring
Australia and New Zealand. Our first stop was Perth,
where we were welcomed at the airport by Sue’s cousin
Paula who, with her husband Craig and their family, had
Abeen living for the past eight years.
After recovering somewhat from the six-hour time difference, we went
the next day with Paula to Kings Park, which overlooks the Swan River
and the central business district of Perth. It is the most popular visitor
destination in Western Australia with two thirds of the park conserved
as native bushland and the 18 hectare botanical garden site displaying
some 2 000 Western Australian flora species.
In 2008, a 750 year old Boab tree was transported 3 200km from
Kimberley in the far north of W.A. and given as a gift by the Gija
people to the city of Perth. The Boab tree can live for 2 000 years and
Perth CBD from the Swan river this specimen called ‘Gija Jumula' a relatively young tree, occupies a
