     Lunch in the
     Serengeti

      Gray-headed Kingfisher and Silvery-cheeked
Hornbill. Our accommodation that night was at
the splendid Kudu Lodge where all 20 in our
group sat at a long table and enjoyed an excellent
      dinner.
After breakfast we were driven in a north-westerly
direction and through the Ngorogoro Conserva-
tion Area, where we passed a number of small
Masai settlements before stopping briefly at the
view spot to admire the Ngorogoro crater and
Lake Magadi below us. As we were to return to
the crater three days later, we continued on to Superb
Oldevai Gorge where Richard Leaky discovered Starling Gorgeous Sunbird
fossilised remains of the first human beings to
walk on Earth. Here there is a museum and a
monument where one can learn the history of
this site, often called the “Cradle of Humankind”.
The Serengeti National Park is only a further
34km and no sooner had we entered the park,
we came across dozens of Ruppel’s vultures
squabbling with a spotted hyena over a zebra
carcass. Our accommodation for the next three
days was Nyikani camp in the central region of
      Serengeti.
In 1981, Serengeti National Park was one of the
first sites listed as a World Heritage Site. Its vast Red-cheeked
unfenced plains witness the annual migration of Cordon-bleu Blue Monkey
thousands of blue wildebeest and plains zebra
as they move in huge herds to the best seasonal
grazing areas in the Kenyan Masai Mara reserve,
returning months later to the Serengeti. We were
not disappointed as we came across a number of
spectacular wildebeest herds numbering in the
      thousands, making their way north.

On our numerous drives around the Serengeti,
we had sightings of over 50 lions in different
prides, often on rocky outcrops surveying the flat
terrain around them. Very generous lunch packs
were provided by the lodge and lunch times Masai Giraffe
were spent with all 20 of us, plus our drivers
and the four vehicles, under a tree on the open Jackson's Widowbird
