PROJECT
Long Lee Manor balcony view
he brief from the client was to install
sustainable landscapes to the three
Tlodges, which should be heavily
weighted towards being interactive with
visiting guests as well as being used for
food production. Long Lee Manor was
chosen as the food production site.
Riverdene is orientated towards families,
with a large component being an
adventure zone for children of all ages
- from toddlers through to teenagers.
The wildlife educational aspect played a
major role in this brief.
Eagles Crag is required to showcase the
mountain and elephant viewing from the
comfort of the lodge’s wrap-around deck.
The Sindile tented camp is a new build
which blends into the natural bush and Long Lee Manor’s boma with private dining pods shaped as onion domes
focusses on the thrill of being in the wild Long Lee Manor pool front
without human interventions such as
fencing and light pollution.
Landmark Studios was approached to
design all external hard and soft work
components to the lodges, and to assist
the architects with the layout of the
tented camp.
Landscape design philosophy
Landscape architect Glenn Wagner says
that the landscapes to all the lodges
are not the “typical bushveld camps we
are familiar with. Rather each one had
to have its own unique experience and
twist”. The lodges were carefully planned
so that the landscaping showcases the
architecture, natural beauty and open
vistas of the area. Access to all of them
was redesigned on a straight visual axis
through the landscape for a better arrival
experience.
The game viewing experience was
encouraged through the landscape,
keeping in mind the comfort of guests.
This was achieved by creating private Eagle’s Crag Lodge with raised timber deck for game viewing
