‘Rehabilitation Works for Drainage of the Chiveve
LRiver in the city of Beira, Mozambique’ was developed
and built, consisting of the rehabilitation of the Chiveve
River with a tidal outflow. Its objective was to improve the
drainage and retention of rainwater in the Chiveve river
basin. Construction of the park was implemented within
the scope of the national government entity AIAS.
Creating a usable public space
The project aims to strengthen the resilience of Beira to
the impacts of climate change, as well as to preserve the
ecosystem and improve the living conditions of the city’s
inhabitants.
Due to its central position, the Chiveve River has an
important drainage function. The site is located in the
south-eastern part of Beira and the city centre is located
in a low-lying estuarine area, influenced by its water
bodies, particularly the Indian Ocean, the Púnguè River
and the tidal river, Chiveve. The project area consists of the
immediate surroundings of the Chiveve River, which cuts
through the city centre, and the green space provided by
the river’s floodplains has good potental for socio-economic
development of the area.
The objective of the park is to create a green network that
permeates the entire city, using the Chiveve River as its
centre. It aims to enable the protection of the river, the
mangrove ecosystem and the wetlands, simultaneously
offering recreational, leisure and commercial spaces. The
Diagram showing the four basins that make up the park area is considered the ‘lung’ of the city of Beira.
