PROJECT

DR. JL DUBE HIGH SCHOOL, KZN

Dr. JL Dube High School takes its name from the distinguished South African essayist,
philosopher, educator, politician, publisher, editor, novelist and poet, Dr  John
Langalibalele Dube. He was also the founding president of the South African Native
National Congress, later to be known as the African National Congress.

             ocated in KwaMashu, eThekwini, the
school has a rich history and was once
         Lthe location of struggle meetings
during the Apartheid regime. It is viewed
as a community asset and following its
revival, needed to echo its historic benefit
for the greater community. This resulted
          in a multi-functional infrastructure for
          auxiliary programmes accommodated in
          the revived buildings and landscape.
           The Cotton On Foundation, the
philanthropy leg of the Cotton On retail
          brand, is passionate about creating
          sustainable and healthy learning
environments. Dr. JL Dube High School
was selected as a beneficiary of its ongoing
          outreach endeavours in the KwaMashu
          community.

          Brief
          Fieldworks Design Group was approached
by the Cotton On Foundation to design
and document the required additions and
alterations to renovate the school. The
scope of work comprised an architectural
          and landscape architectural component,
as set out below: Above and below: Seating terraces and planters act as mitigation measures between levels. The robust
buildings respond to local climatic conditions.
