NEWS FROM THE OPERATIONS TEAM
SILVER LAKES SNAKE HANDLERS
Three of our staff members, Fred, Koot
and Phineas attended a snake handling
training course at African Venom and
Reptiles, and are now qualified snake
handlers. Mike Perry, course founder and
trainer, taught our staff a lot about snakes,
snake handling, the reactions of the
venom and first aid. The course covered
general information about the many
types of snakes, their distribution, and the
venomous and benign species.
Common snakes found here in Pretoria
East and in our game reserve include the
following non-venomous snakes: Brown
house snake, Herald or Red lipped snake
and Common grass snake. Venomous
snakes in our area include: Rinkhals, Night
adder, Cobra, Mozambique spitter and the
Snouted cobra.
The best advice when encountering
a snake is to let security know on
012 809 0424/5. They will dispatch one of
our snake catchers to assist. Please keep a
watchful eye on the snake’s movement so
that they can catch it on their arrival. Our qualified snake handlers at Silver Lakes, Phineas, Koot and Fred
