Dr Wilfred Bock, Executive Head
at Curro Waterfall, knows it takes
a village to raise a child, and has
struck on an exciting new way to
bring this concept to 21st Century
parenting.
o ne Thursday a month sees a flood of Waterfall
parents and residents joined by the general
public at one of Dr Bock’s Masterclasses. These
Masterclasses were designed by Dr Bock to
foster a sense of community within the school, boost social
development and support busy parents in the challenging
task of raising children in the constant buzz of modern life.
The classes support the school’s own curriculum and
goals. “We’ve got social development goals, so every
month we have a key focus. January was the month
of setting goals and reflection, while February was the
month of kindness and smiles. We set the theme of the
Masterclass based on our key focus area for the month,
where the theme is incorporated into everything we
do for that month at school,” explains Dr Bock.
The classes are not just another seminar with a PowerPoint
presentation. The hall is set up to encourage interaction
amongst the parents, teachers and the guest speakers.
Babysitting services are available, and a bite to eat is served
after the session, providing attendees with the opportunity
to reflect on the class, engage with Dr Bock and the guest
speakers, and share their own insights with one another.
Perhaps the biggest draw cards are the notable guest
speakers who address the audience each month. September
2019 welcomed Jacques Blignaut of 7de Laan fame, who
discussed the difficult topic of emotional well-being and
dealing with negative emotions. Luvuyo Madasa, Executive
Director of ReImagine SA, visited in October 2019 and
