Waterfall City News
• Tim Ivins, for the exciting chapter
on the indigenous trees found in
Waterfall City’s green belts, along
with pictures of each and their
various medicinal uses.
• Elias and Hildi van Dyk, for their
extensive and painstaking work
on photographing, identifying and
listing the considerable variety of
wildflowers in the green belts.
• Dave Randell, a late recruit who had
the unenviable task of identifying
and listing the green belt grasses late
in the season, well beyond the ideal
time for their inflorescences.
• Kevin Gow, for his knowledgeable,
engaging and comprehensive
chapters dealing with mammals,
reptiles and amphibians, and for his
photography.
The support of family and friends
of the contributors must also be
mentioned, “many of whom had to
live with our absence arising from
numerous, almost daily exploratory
estate walks”, adds Ron Searle.
For the nature enthusiast, this guide
is a priceless piece of literature.
Comprehensive and unique, it’s a
fascinating read and offers a glimpse
into the natural world of Waterfall City.
The Field Guide was recently launched
at an exclusive, invitation-only event
at Mall of Africa on 8 June. Among
those invited were key stakeholders
and partners of the Waterfall City
development, Estate Management,
Committee and Board members,
Landscaping service providers,
Geology and Life Sciences teachers
from Reddam and Curro, the Bird
Club Committee members and, of
course, the authors as well as all the
contributors to the guide. Beautiful
music was provided by a wandering
violinist and catering was by Lucky
Bread. Guests were treated to freshly
squeezed juices and brunch canapes
while browsing through their
complimentary copy of the guide.
