“Waterfall City has become a focal
point for international counterparts
and educational institutions seeking to
understand and learn from its model,”
says Piet Joubert, General Manager of Waterfall City Management Company
landmark buildings. Along the route, they visited Munyaka
Estate’s Lifestyle Centre and Crystal Lagoon, the Waterfall
Valley Mature Lifestyle Estate, and commercial hubs such as
Attacq’s head office. The tour also stopped at Ellipse Waterfall,
where the students were shown a penthouse apartment with Munyaka Lifestyle Centre and Crystal Lagoon
spectacular views over the entire City. A visit to the green,
award-winning Mall of Africa concluded the tour.
Hluma Ralane, Project Coordinator for ACSUS said, “Being able to
tour a development like Waterfall City is a massive opportunity
for our Africa-US Smart Cities Project, and these students. Some
of the most impactful aspects of the tour included a view into
the security and safety of this smart city and the walkability
element, which provides massive convenience in terms of
accessibility to those who live and work here. We were also
impressed with the wide scope of local and global entities
that have chosen to base their headquarters in this mixed-use Waterfall Valley Mature Lifestyle Estate
development, and seeing the green smart buildings that they
operate in. Witnessing first-hand such successful smart living in
South Africa provided a solid practical example of the benefits
of smart cities and their wider impact on an economy.”
ACSUS’ selection of Waterfall City as a key learning site
underscores the development’s growing prominence on the
international stage. Having won Best International Masterplan
2024/25 at the International Property Awards in February this
year, Waterfall City’s innovative approach to urban development,
infrastructure integration, and quality of life is increasingly being
studied as a blueprint for future smart city initiatives globally.
“Waterfall City is not only attracting a diverse range of
prestigious international commercial and retail tenants, Ellipse Waterfall
solidifying its economic significance, but it has also become
a focal point for international counterparts and educational
institutions seeking to understand and learn from its
model,” says Piet Joubert, General Manager of Waterfall
City Management Company. “It was a pleasure to host the
students and to showcase the innovative, world-class urban
design framework of Waterfall City, and we trust that they
walked away with some interesting insights into smart city
development. It is also a great compliment to be considered
for such a tour by ACSUS, and we hope to continue to play a
role in future tours too.”
By showcasing Waterfall City, ACSUS was able to provide
concrete examples to the students of successful smart city
implementation in Africa, demonstrating its potential to
international stakeholders and fostering knowledge exchange
for the advancement of intelligent urban living worldwide.
