STATE MUSEUM
he first museum in Pretoria was formally
constituted on 1 December 1892,
Toriginally named the Staatsmuseum
(State Museum). It was founded with the
purpose of preserving and displaying the
diverse natural and manufactured products,
art, and antiquities of South Africa.
The museum has moved over the years from
the Raadsaal, to Market Square - photo below
- and later to Boom Street.
Today, the legacy of the original Staatsmuseum
lives on under the name Ditsong Museums of
South Africa. The institution has grown into
a network of eight distinct museums, seven
of which remain located in Tshwane, offering
a wealth of cultural and natural history to
visitors from around the world.
