EDITOR’S MESSAGE
Celebrating our Children
t’s the time of year when many of the young men and women who wrote
matric in 2022 are enjoying the fruits of their labour. Schools are sharing their
Ipride with the world and parents are breathing a sigh of relief. It’s also my first
edition as editor, and a wonderful opportunity for me to share in the excitement.
No matter what anyone says, South Africa still has what it takes to offer world-
class education, and many of our private schools are among the best. The results
speak for themselves.
Congratulations to the class of 2022. May your futures be bright and filled with
opportunities.
With 20 years of teaching under my belt, I have experienced may highs and lows
with students and families. That’s why I also feel it’s as important to recognise the
rest. Those who, for whatever reason, are not featured on social media pages and
in editorials.
I’ve gone a bit deeper in my article, ‘Here’s to the Square Pegs’ later in this edition.
After an interesting journey raising a dyslexic child and teaching children with
various challenges, I left the classroom to become a writer. My intention was to
be an advocate for the neurodivergent – for those that don’t fit the box – and
a support to their parents who deal with the extreme stress that comes with
pushing your child through a system that doesn’t meet their needs. And the
response has been incredible. I’ve connected with so many moms and dads who
just needed to know they weren’t alone.
To those parents who are still on their journey, regardless of what the road looks
like, always know that your love, support, and understanding of exactly what
makes your child tick and will ultimately set them up for life.
Good luck to all the students and parents as you make your way through 2023.
Kind regards
Nicola Killops
