SA LAUNCH MERCEDES
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
or a number of years, the Mercedes plant in SA has been
producing the C-Class model for both local and export
Fmarkets. Considering that over 10.5 million C-Class cars
have been sold worldwide, with over 260 000 sold in SA, it’s
clear what a success this model has been.
The new model was quietly launched in SA at the end of
2021 but because of the supply issues, we had to wait until
recently for the media launch that took place in Paarl and the
surrounding areas to allow us to experience open roads and
mountain passes during our time behind the wheel.
At this stage, only two models are available (I dare not call
them entry models!). The C200 is powered by a 1.5l 4-cylinder
turbo petrol engine giving 150kW and 300Nm, while the C220D
is powered by a 2l diesel engine that provides 147kW and
440Nm. The 9-speed automatic transmission drives the rear
wheels and both engines possess 48V EQ technology to add
extra boost when required.
The range has been simplified, with only Avantgarde or AMG
lines offered. There are many characteristic features on each,
starting with their very distinctive front grilles. The interior is
dominated by a massive 12-inch tablet-style screen in the centre
as well as the familiar Mercedes TFT instrument panel.
It’s on the road where the vehicles’ capabilities really
count and both cars can be driven with verve if wanted, while
the diesel definitely feels more relaxed at cruising speeds.
The C-Class is extremely comfortable and the chassis and ride
are top notch when pushing the car through a challenging
mountain pass like the magnificent Franschhoek Pass. Space
and luxury are as expected at this level.
Overall, with prices starting from around R850 000,
depending on the specification level and extras, the new C-Class
is my pick in the medium executive sedan segment. n
