THE BENEFITS
OF HORSE
RIDING

mproved balance, coordination, and
healthy bone and muscle growth are just a
Ifew of the many benefits that regular sports
and physical activity provide to children and
adults alike. However, horse riding comes with
the bonus of increased self-confidence, self-
esteem and even a proven boost in cognitive
abilities. Besides, who doesn’t love stroking
and nuzzling the gentle giants at any of the
nearby stables?
Horse riding is no different from any other
sport in the sense that it provides benefits
to your physical health. The rhythm and
movement of the horse improve the rider’s
circulation and help to stretch muscles,
promoting flexibility and range of motion.
Riders also have increased balance and
coordination, as these critical skills are
needed to stay on the horse while learning to
ride. In addition to building muscle and bone
strength, you get an excellent core workout.
The muscles that are mostly worked during
horse riding are those in your thighs, lower
back, hips and abdominals – essentially, your
core.
The mental health benefits associated with
horse riding are considerable, and reason
enough for you to seriously consider taking
it up as a regular hobby. Frequent interaction
with horses fosters a sense of compassion
towards animals and teaches the importance
of being gentle and kind to other beings.
There is also a great sense of freedom
associated with horse riding as you can feel
the wind blowing through your hair, hear
the sounds of nature and see the open fields
and blue sky all around you. As a result, horse
riding reduces stress and helps you relax by
providing a break from the chaos that life
sometimes brings.
When riding, you have the opportunity to
develop communication and problem-solving
skills as you work together with the horse
to overcome challenges and obstacles. No
