ESTATE MATTERS
Alfred Seroto
CONTROLLER
Alfred also comes from Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province,
which is not such a coincidence if one considers that Tzaneen
is the second largest town in Limpopo after Polokwane. Alfred
is the eldest of a large family and, because both his parents
have passed on, he is now the family patriarch. His wife of
more than 22 years and his three children live in Tzaneen
where he visits as often as he is able. Alfred attributes his
excellent health and youthful appearance to being a sports
fan: he supports the Proteas and Lions Cricket teams and he
is an avid roadrunner for the Rainbow Athletics Club. What
stands out for Alfred in the 10 years he has worked at Cornwall
Hill Estate has been the kindness of residents who are fellow
runners and the various support they have offered him.
Robert Mashoga
MAINTENANCE & GROUND STAFF
I am quite sure you will have driven past Robert as he zips
around the estate on his bright yellow quad bike, fitted with a
ladder and toolbox, tending to the electric fence or delivering
petrol to the brush cutters. His responsibilities for the fence take
him to the borders of the estate and he comments that he likes
the comical antics of the monkeys that he sees in the trees as he
is busy working. A recent highlight for Robert was the flooding
and the emergency repairs that had to be made to the electric
fences. Robert is yet another member of staff who comes from
the Limpopo Province but this time from Mokopane. He lives
in nearby Tembisa with his family including his two teenage
children. He enjoys spending his free time listening to music,
particularly reggae and gospel.
Jonas Mabe
MAINTENANCE & GROUND STAFF
It is fitting that Jonas wears gumboots as part of his uniform
– as protection against the snakes he comes across during
brush cutting – because Jonas is from Qwa Qwa in the Free
State on the border with Lesotho where his wife and three
adult children still live. Jonas is an entrepreneur at heart, he
enjoys the business of buying and re-selling, as well as his love
of music, particularly Sotho music. Looking back on 10 years
of service Jonas remembers the former maintenance manager,
the late Oom Gideon, who passed away in November 2015.
‘Oom’ would always say “remember me when I am gone” and
everyone would agree, never thinking illness would take him
so soon.
Calvin Diala
MAINTENANCE & GROUND STAFF
Calvin also hails from the Province of Limpopo. He comes from
a large family, being one of twelve children, and is lucky to still
have both his parents. He currently lives in Tembisa with his
family and has a young daughter. Calvin supports the Orlando
Pirates soccer team in his leisure time and tells me – with a huge
smile - that he likes jokes as well. He enjoys working at Cornwall
Hill Estate firstly because it is such a beautiful place and he often
comes across tortoises and small buck during his duties and
secondly, because everyone works together well which means
he gets to enjoy his job.
