and WHaT IT MEans TO yOu

Text and photography by Karen Else

hat lockdown means to us…. I guess we
all have to stay at home. This is a time
Wwhen people are inside their houses and
have time to think deeply on issues, they never had
time to deal with in their routine lives, giving more
love, attention and time to the ones they are in
              lockdown with.

We just have to feel into this, perhaps needing the
solitude and the break. There is always a positive in
every negative situation. It is perhaps also an ideal
time to embrace living at a slower pace, a pace
that is kinder to people and to our planet. In this
pandemic period, social distancing and isolation, Else escaped together
hand sanitising and masks have become the 'new for early morning
normal'; one thing that will keep us going through walkies. Making
the tough times is memories. memories in lockdown-
                                                                                                      great to see other people
Sometimes we don’t realise how blessed we are and doggies.
until it is taken from us through a crisis. We have
embraced the discomfort and are grateful for
things like jobs, financial security, freedom, friends,
              family, health.

              little things that these changes
              have made us notice….
              • Woken up to food waste

              • Learnt to support and love local

              • Getting involved in local communities. It is
beautiful to see how people have a heart to help
              others

              • Getting out to exercise and/or do online yoga
              classes

              • Appreciating the bees and the birds and the
              change to autumn colours

              • Really missing the Friday night braais and seeing Enjoying more evenings outside on the days when alcoholic beverages were allowed. Stood
friends still to capture sunsets and treat ourselves to tranquillity.

              • Learning what are essential and non-essential
              goods

              • Social distancing, if you are used to hugging
              family and friends

              • The value of doctors, healthcare officials and
              emergency workers

              • Managing time, what I am passionate about. Once
this is all over, I will look forward to going back to
normal things like coffee dates, lunch and dinner
              with friends.
              • I don’t think we want another lockdown after this
              – or even to go back to level 5, so let’s just follow
the rules and hope for the best.

Tough times are with us all!!
Celebrating a first wedding anniversary in lockdown with a poolside breakfast and treating ourselves
to Whisk WhatsApp order- grateful they were able to open and deliver their delicious pizzas.
