My contribution to the session was to
interview Mary and Bobs, a couple that
had already been trying their hand at
entrepreneurship. While Bobs tried to start
a garden services business, Mary sold
scones. She had already differentiated her
product by making her scones with milk
rather than water - a difference that she
said her customers appreciated. (We all got
to taste the difference as we’d supported
Mary by buying her scones for that
morning’s tea break.) More impressively,
she had overcome her lack of access to
electricity by selling her labour for the use
of an oven until she could afford to buy
her own small oven. Together, the couple

Marlese closed the meeting on an
encouraging note: “There are so many
people around us with such a wide variety
of skills. All we have to do is access the
resources hiding in plain sight.”
Initiatives like these are full of challenges,
but none of them are insurmountable.
