LAWN PREPARATION
Kikuyu lawns need to be cut short
by setting the mower on its lowest
setting or they can be scarified by a
professional. This is to remove the old
dead matter that has accumulated
during winter. Fertilise or apply lawn
dressing and sufficient water to start
the new season lawn growing.
LM lawn should not be cut short and
no lawn dressing needs to be applied,
but sufficient water and fertiliser are
required.
Make sure that all standard roses,
young trees and shrubs are securely
staked.
If compost was added in autumn as
mulch to shrubs and beds, it can now
be tilled into the soil along with a slow- Image: Laney Smith
release fertiliser of your choice. Apply
a new layer of compost or mulch, but
don’t till again. The odd weed can be
removed by hand.
Large potted plants can be rejuvenated
by removing the top layer of old
potting soil and replacing it with
