Gardening

           n some areas, the winter
           temperatures were colder than
last year, and frost damage may
Ibe visible on a variety of plants in
your garden. But now spring is in the
air, so it’s time to get busy preparing
         for a spectacular summer show.
         TRIMMING
TIPS FOR preparation for summer. Check long-
This would be the first step in

term weather forecasts to ensure that
no more cold spells are predicted.

         Prune poinsettia, hypericum,
         solanum, canary creepers, golden
         showers and buddleia to remove
dead or overgrowing plant material. If,
by chance, your roses still need to be
pruned, this can still be done.

SPRING Prune wisteria and mayflower as soon
         as they have finished flowering.

         Hedges like Duranta, plumbago and
         even Carissa macrocarpa that may
have severe cold damage on the
top can be trimmed back to the first
green growth. Remember to apply Image: Annie Spratt
fertiliser and compost at soil level.
         Hedge plants grown close together
         are, naturally, heavy feeders.
