YOU NEED TO EXERCISE
– YOUR PHONE DOES
NOT
Fourways Gardens Estate is a safe environment
in which to exercise. However, when leaving the
estate to cycle, run or walk, it is best to leave your
phone at home.
The past few weeks have seen a dramatic spike
in cyclists, runners and walkers being hijacked/
attacked while out exercising on the roads. Most
athletes exercise with an expensive phone to
track steps and distances, but using a phone is
inviting trouble.
We appeal to all athletes to please refrain from
exercising with any valuables:
• Leave mobile phones at home (measure a route
in your car and then run it if you must), but
please do not run or cycle with a phone - not
only does this pose a danger to yourself, but
also to other athletes.
• Do not run with iPods or any form of music in
your ears. Not only does this make you a target
(due to the value of the iPod), but you won’t
hear tra c and thugs approaching you.
• Remove all jewellery before heading out on the
road for an exercise session.
• Try not to exercise alone, irrespective of the
time of day or the route that you follow - many
incidents occur on busy roads in broad daylight.
• If you wear an expensive training watch,
consider covering it with a bu to hide it from
opportunistic criminals.
Cyber Security Tips of
Month:
• Set the ‘Lock Code’ on your phone with a timer
to lock the screen. While unlocking your phone
after a short period of no use may seem painful
initially, it does become second nature and is a
great rst line of defence.
• Manually log out of sites after making a
payment or purchase. We recommend that you
don’t allow sites like Google and e-commerce
payment gateways from storing your credit
card details.
• Manually log out of your internet banking and
social media sites, and do not allow these sites
to auto-store your passwords.
• Never download apps outside of Google Play
or iOS App Stores. There are a host of developer
programmes available that may contain hidden
malware.
