Estate News
Budget approval for certain areas will Houdini – our newest addition to the Nature Reserve
be negotiated at HOA Board level, some
of which will include significant capital
investment. Some funds will also be
required for minor changes, ongoing
improvements and maintenance.
Rat infestation
The rat infestation of the bird hide and
trailer park has been an ongoing concern
for everyone. With outside assistance and
the support of Phase 1 residents, the rats
at the trailer park are all but history, with
the rodents now more of an exception
than a continuous eyesore and health
threat. Unsightly rat burrows and tunnels to
breeding areas have been blocked off and
sanitised to the best of our ability, (bearing
in mind the safety of our wildlife), with no
more rat nest/defecation odours.
Because we need to feed the cranes, rats
will always be attracted to the area, and so
an ongoing monitoring system is in place.
We’ve sought expert advice on the most
appropriate and humane management of
the rats and will continue to deal with them
in the recommended way with the utmost
concern for the birds, terrapins and other
wildlife in and around the reserve.
On the subject of other wildlife, we’re
aware of recent sightings of bush babies,
mongoose and genets in the area. The
dassies are still a problem, but interventions
that are acceptable to all are being
considered.
Cleaning up
The reeds in the dam require ongoing
clearing, but with the birds nesting/
breeding right now, we can’t disturb nature
at this point. Through consultation with the
appropriate organisations, we intend to
address this in 2023 and beyond.
