MANDELA
DAY
Thursday 18 July 2024
or Mandela Day 2024, we invited
the Fourways Gardens community
to vote on charitable causes close
Fto their hearts, to determine which
people-centred and animal welfare charities
would be the beneficiaries of the Donations
Drive. Four poll options were provided
by the HOA: WAS Foundation, Greendoor
Shelter, Dog’s Trust and Kitty-and-Puppy
Haven. A further seven charities were
nominated by the community: Rainbow
and Smiles, African Badgers Sports and
Community Upliftment, Daily Bread, Book
Village, Friends of Free Wildlife, 67 Blankets
for Mandela Day and Place-a-Pup.
The top “people” charity voted for was the
We’re Against Starvation (WAS Foundation)
and Dog’s Trust was the animal charity with
the most support in the poll. We approached
the two charities for their requirements:
WAS Foundation indicated they needed
supplies for their Kid’s Breakfast and Kid’s
Lunchbox projects: cereals, porridge, long-
life milk, cordials, jams and even used
plastic crockery. Dog’s Trust indicated that
they needed wet (canned) food for adult
dogs and puppies, as these treats make the
meals more interesting for their rescues
and give them some love while they wait
for adoption.
Donations lists in hand, the call for
donations were made to the Fourways
Gardens community, and our sponsor
for the event, Tyson Properties made a
generous donation to get the ball rolling,
which was matched by the HOA. As the
countdown to the close of collections
neared, all manner of requested goods
were provided by the community, and we
appreciate every donation made!
On Friday 19 July, representatives from
WAS Foundation and Dog’s Trust arrived
for a handover with the Estate Manager
and Tyson Properties Fourways; they were
amazed at the volume of donations.
The kind-hearted generosity of this
community has made a difference in many
lives – human and animal alike!
