PROJECT

Fibonacci spiral: end point spiral section
historically, the farm’s fruit and vegetables
          were grown. All necessary measures,
including those pertaining to health and
safety, were taken into account, including
          noise reduction measures during meal
times, as the construction site was located
50m from the Spier Farm Café. Contract
          specifications made provision for the
          following:
          • earthworks comprising demolition of
           original structures, importing of new
           fill material, levelling, compaction,
           excavation for the Fibonacci water
           course, shaping of localised berms
           within planters, bed preparation, fine
grading and mulching of beds after
           planting.
          • installation or construction of the steel
           structures and all above-mentioned
hard landscaping elements as well as
           instant lawn, shrubs and trees.
          • Contours Landscapes was appointed
to install the play garden using its own
           builders, horticulturists and landscape
teams. They were also contracted Custom built steel pergola and timber and rope swing bridge
           to manage all sub-contractor works
           including irrigation, sandstone
           cladding, electrical, steel works, the
           water reticulation system and painting.

Bevil Steyn, director and project manager
of Contours Landscapes, explains that as
the site was enclosed by walls of historical
significance, this made for very constrained
working conditions as some of the features
had to be constructed close to each other.
It was therefore decided to phase the works
so that areas furthest from the vehicular
access gate could be tackled first. There
were eight work phases in total.
With a project as detailed and complex
as this one, Steyn says that the site
          constraints and construction aspects were
considerable. He adds that the client was
          “intimately involved from the conceptual
phase through to works completion”. Fibonacci spiral: raised water
