              andscape architect Wim Vunderink
says that the brief was to create an
Laesthetically green landscape in a Shopping centre signage
water scarce environment and to retain
existing indigenous trees as much as
possible. The main pedestrian links cater
for visitors to enable them to move easily
and safely throughout the parking area.
           Design concept and soft
           landscaping
The design concept aimed to create a lush
and green landscape in an area known
for being dry and bare. Water therefore
played a major role in the plant selection.
The focus of DRLA’s design philosophy
is the people who visit the centre. “We A friendly welcome to the shopping centre
were determined to create an area
where visitors would experience a sense
           of belonging and wonderment when
making their way along the walkways and
           passages,” explains Vunderink.
A water wise plant palette was chosen
to fill the landscape with as much
greenery as possible, and all plant choices
are species that grow well in the area. In
addition, choices were based on plants
           and trees being evergreen throughout
the year, which makes a strong impact
on the public visiting the site. Plant and
Containerised plants and trees soften the vast areas of hard landscaping
