Horticultural conservation workers, staff
and students maintain and develop the
arboretum garden section to meet SANBI’s
mission of promoting the sustainable use
and conservation of South African flora. This
is done by means of creative displays and
tasks such as planting, composting, feeding,
pruning and other general horticultural tasks.
About Kirstenbosch
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
is one of the 11 national botanical and
zoological gardens administered by SANBI,
which coordinates research, monitors and
reports on the state of biodiversity in South
Africa. It provides information, engages in
ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation,
and manages South Africa’s biodiversity for
enjoyment and education.
About ArbNet
ArbNet is an international community of
arboreta, sharing knowledge and other
resources to help arboreta meet their goals
and raise professional standards. The ArbNet
Arboretum Accreditation Programme,
sponsored by the Morton Arboretum in
Illinois, USA, is the only global initiative to
officially recognise arboreta based on a set of
professional standards. The program offers
four levels of accreditation, recognising
arboreta of various degrees of development,
capacity and professionalism. Standards
include planning, governance, public access,
programming, tree science, planting and
conservation.
