BASIC CONTAINER GARDENING

balconies, patios or for small gardens.
PLarge gardens will benefit from a
focal point created by a container with
colourful annuals or sculptural plants.
Containers
• The planter should complement the
design of the garden, suit the style of
the house and contain sufficient space
for the plant or plants of your choice.
With planters/containers ‘bigger is
always better’.
• Recycled items such as wheelbarrows or
wooden pallets make excellent planters.
Line the interior of wooden barrels with
waterproof fabric.
• Plants in terracotta pots will need to be
watered more often due to the porous
nature of clay. Galvanised metal pots are
best used in shade as they overheat in
the sun.
• The shapes and colour of concrete
containers are very ‘on-trend’. Remember
to fill and plant in situ as large concrete
planters are extremely heavy.
