BOOK REVIEW
IT’S THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE A TOWN
By James Clarke
think I’ve been to Steytlerville. In fact,
I must have, for I’ve been through the
I astern Cape Karoo a few times. But in
E
those days, I suppose it was one of those
places of which Dorothy Parker would have
said: “When you get there, there is no
there there.”
I have now vowed that when I am in that
area again, I will stop at Steytlerville and I
will walk down its main road and, at the end,
have a cup of coffee at Lizzy’s Khaya which is,
in fact, part of her house.
The town gets a chapter to itself in a very
entertaining new book, Karoo Roads II –
More Tales from the South African Heartland
by Julienne du Toit and Chris Marais.
The main road through the town is an
extraordinarily wide road. To the far south,
there’s Baviaanskloof. Beyond that is
Humansdorp and St Francis Bay. All around,
it’s sheep and Angora goat country. Main Road, Steytlerville
