Then you can follow the Garden Route
through Wilderness and Knysna to
Plettenberg Bay, where you can see the
resident Cape Fur seal colonies at their
breeding site on Robberg Peninsula. The
peninsula is also one of the most scenic
hiking destinations along the Garden Route.

On your way back up to the Highveld, be
sure to visit the Wild Coast for some rough
and ready experiences in the rugged and
unspoilt countryside, among indigenous
forest and mangrove swamps.

Many travel blogs promise warmer weather
in South Africa during August, but up here
on the Highveld, the month can be brutal,
with frost, chilly winds and dust. That said,

spotting as the vegetation in the veld is
thinner and the wildlife tend to congregate
around the watering holes, which makes
them easier to spot.

So, on your return to Gauteng, be sure
to round off your trip by checking in to
one of the nearby game reserves such as
Pilanesberg National Park, Dinokeng Game
Reserve, Bronkhorstspruit Nature Reserve,
or Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

With fuel costs skyrocketing, a road trip
around the country may seem hugely
expensive, but there’s no guarantee that
things will get better. So, swop that overseas
trip on your bucket list for a unique and
memorable local getaway. You’re bound to
experience the best in nature and wildlife
that South Africa has to offer.
