3. Use a programmable thermostat
Heating and cooling are among the biggest energy users in
your home.
What to do:
- Install a programmable or smart thermostat to adjust
temperatures automatically when you are asleep or away.
- In winter, lower your thermostat by just one to two degrees
to save energy without noticing a big difference.
4. Unplug energy wasters
Even when they are off, many devices continue to draw power;
this is called “phantom load”.
What to do:
- Unplug chargers, electronics and small appliances when not
in use.
- Use power strips to switch off multiple devices at once.
5. Improve insulation
Better insulation helps keep your home warm in the winter and
cool in the summer.
What to do:
- Check your attic, walls and floors; insulating these areas can
greatly reduce heating and cooling costs.
- Insulate your water heater and exposed hot water pipes to
retain heat.
6. Be smart with appliances
Older appliances use more energy than newer, efficient
models.
What to do:
- Look for ENERGY STAR-rated appliances when it’s time to
replace the old ones.
- Use cold water for laundry, clean your dryer’s lint filter
regularly, and air-dry clothes when possible.
7. Use curtains to your advantage
Sunlight can heat or cool your home, depending on the season.
What to do:
- In summer, close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of
the day.
- In winter, open them up to let in the sun’s warmth.
Bonus tip: Get an energy audit
Many utility companies offer free or low-cost home energy
audits. A professional can identify problem areas and
recommend tailored fixes to your home.
Small changes, big impact
Making your home more energy efficient doesn’t have to be
overwhelming. Start small; each improvement adds up to
lower bills, a more comfortable home and a lighter footprint
on the planet.
