WHY YOU SHOULD STERILISE YOUR CAT
By Kathy O’ Connor
id you know that a single
unsterilised cat and her offspring
Dcan produce thousands of kittens
in just a few years? Cats are natural
wanderers and often difficult to keep
indoors, making sterilisation not just
important, but essential.
Unsterilised cats reproduce at a rapid
rate. A female cat can become pregnant
as early as 6 months old, with a pregnancy
lasting about two months. Just weeks
after giving birth, she can conceive again.
Over her lifetime, a single female cat can
give birth to more than 100 kittens.
Male cats that are not neutered can
father hundreds – if not thousands –
of kittens, adding to the ever-growing
population of stray and unwanted cats.
Benefits of sterilisation
• Controls overpopulation - There are
already too many kittens and not
enough homes. Sterilisation helps
prevent unwanted litters.
• Reduces health risks - Spaying or
neutering lowers the risk of certain
cancers and other health issues,
helping to keep your cat healthier.
• Improves behaviour - Sterilised cats
are typically less aggressive, reducing
fights, territorial disputes and the
spread of disease.
