LANDSCAPING –
FACT OR FICTION?

T o add a little fun to our last
edition of 2022, we dispel
some myths and share some
facts about landscaping and
your garden.
People feel calmer with
a seascape screensaver
than with a landscaped
screensaver.
Fiction – Research worldwide has shown
that the most widely-used screensavers
are more likely to be rolling hills or
lavendar fields than crashing waves.
Watering grass during the
hottest period of the day will
burn your grass.
Fiction – When cooling down your
grass with water for a short time during
the middle of a hot summer’s day, it
is referred to as syringing your grass.
Prolonged periods of heat elevate
the internal leaf temperatures. Water
droplets assist by cooling down the
leaf in a fraction of a second before
evaporation occurs. However, do not
confuse deep watering with syringing.
Syringing is only a short 3-minute
cycle compared to deep watering for
20-minutes at midday, which will lead to
soil-borne diseases and root rot, as the
damp soil temperature will rise higher
than the atmosphere’s temperature.
Conclusion – Watering your grass during
the hottest part of the day is healthy, but
it should only be a little, to cool it down.
