“The FireOps SA truck got called away on
                                                                               an emergency in the middle of the day.
                                                                               However, the Lieutenant on duty stayed
                                                                               behind and started instructing the teams
                                                                               like they were in the military,” says van
                                                                               den Berg. “Teams had to drop down for
                                                                               push-ups and burpees – real firefighter-
                                                                               style drills. Everyone was exhausted but
                                                                               had so much fun!”


                                                                               Meanwhile, over at Mall of Africa, the
                                                                               Estée Lauder challenge saw participants
                                                                               channelling their inner makeup artists.
                                                                               Teams had to give one member a
                                                                               makeover, then perform a TikTok dance
                                                                               to a Meghan Trainor song, adding a dash
                                                                               of glamour to the race. “It was a great mix
                                                                               of physical challenges and fun activities,
                                                                               ensuring everyone found something they
                                                                               enjoyed,” van den Berg explains.


                                                                               In Waterfall City Park, the participating
                                                                               teams contributed to a charitable
                                                                               cause by riding the Ferris Wheel. One
                                                                               team member had to pay R100 to ride
                                                                               to the top, grab a selfie and enjoy the
                                                                               magnificent view of Waterfall City in
                                                                               the background. The money raised was
                                                                               donated to the Abraham Kriel Bambanani
                                                                               Children’s Home.


                                                                               “What was fantastic is that most teams
                                                                               all paid and went on the Ferris Wheel
                                                                               together, so we were able to raise more
                                                                               than R10k for the charity,” adds van den
                                                                               Berg.


                                                                               Other Hotspots included a virtual golf
                                                                               challenge at World of Golf, high-speed laps
                                                                               at Kyalami Indoor Karting, rowing across
                                                                               the Munyaka lagoon, getting down and
                                                                               dirty at the Life Green compost heap, and
                                                                               a collaboration between Petzone and the
                                                                               Midrand SPCA. Teams had to purchase
                                                                               SPCA-approved items from Petzone,
                                                                               with a minimum spend of R100. Many
                                                                               chose to give even more, with extra dog
                                                                               food, toys, and treats for the animals. In a
                                                                               heartwarming gesture, Montego donated
                                                                               snacks and treats to the SPCA through
                                                                               a special promotion that ran on the day.
                                                                               Petzone also gifted the SPCA with a
                                                                               R2,000 voucher, and to top it off, generous
                                                                               donations from the public flowed in as
                                                                               people passing through the store stopped
                                                                               to contribute. Together, these efforts
                                                                               brought hope and care to animals in need.
