“What was impressive is how the true spirit of the Olympics was
taken up by our residents,” says Pam. “The principles of Olympism
are Excellence, Respect and Friendship. I always stressed that the
aim and objective of the event was not to win and be the best at
everything but to get out of the comfort zone that you may be
in. Challenge yourself, support others, learn something new, and
enjoy life to the best of your ability right now.”
All the game hosts managed their events well over the two
months, going the extra mile to ensure an enjoyable and
successful time for participants. No less than 650 medals were
handed out over the 25 activities. “Everyone loves being a
winner, especially for a Geldhof handmade Belgian chocolate
Gym Swimming medal,” smiles Linda.
A gala dinner was held on 7 June to close the Mature
Olympics 2024 and recognise the contributions and
success of everyone involved in making it a memorable and
triumphant celebration of active aging.
Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern
Olympics, once said: “The most important thing in the
Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential
thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”
The Waterfall City Mature Olympics 2024 not only proved that
athleticism and enthusiasm is well and truly alive in the senior
Zumba residents at Waterfall Hills and Waterfall Valley, but it also
highlighted the strong community spirit and the importance
of staying active and engaged at any age.
