Captured in the stillness of early morning before the crowds arrived, this image of St. Peter’s
Basilica and St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City offers a rare moment of calm at one of
the world’s most visited landmarks. The Basilica, a masterpiece of Renaissance architec-
ture, was built over more than a century, from 1506 to 1626, and is traditionally regarded
as the burial site of Saint Peter, one of Jesus’s apostles and the first Pope. The square itself,
designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, is framed by sweeping colonnades
meant to symbolically embrace visitors. At its centre stands an ancient Egyptian obelisk,
relocated here in 1586, adding a touch of timeless grandeur to the heart of the Catholic
world and home of the Pope.
