THE BIG PICTURE
An Allen’s Gallinule (Porphyrio alleni)
Afr. Kleinkoningriethaan, forages along the water’s
edge in Nylsvley Nature Reserve, Limpopo. This
small, secretive member of the rail family is
typically found in well-vegetated wetlands across
sub-Saharan Africa. Preferring quiet backwaters
and reedbeds, it feeds on aquatic invertebrates,
small fish and plant matter. Though often elusive,
this Gallinule becomes more visible during the
breeding season when it ventures into more open
spaces. Photographed from the Jacana Hide using
a Canon EOS R7 and RF 800mm f/11 lens.
