EXPLORING THE
MONTESSORI
APPROACH
TO EARLY
CHILDHOOD
DEVELOPMENT
3. SENSITIVE PERIODS
Children go through sensitive periods
during their development—times
when they are particularly receptive to
learning certain skills. These windows of
heightened sensitivity vary for each child,
and the Montessori method is designed
to recognise and respond to these
periods, allowing children to fully develop
essential skills at their own pace.
4. THE PREPARED ENVIRONMENT
A hallmark of Montessori education is
the prepared environment—a carefully
arranged space that encourages
children to explore independently.
This environment is designed to meet
the child’s needs, offering a variety of
materials that foster both physical and
intellectual development. In a Montessori
classroom, children can choose their
activities and engage with materials
that pique their interest, promoting self-
guided learning.
5. AUTO EDUCATION
One of the most empowering aspects of
Montessori is the idea of auto education,
or self-education. Montessori believed
that children can teach themselves with
the right resources and support. The role
of the educator in this setting is to guide
and facilitate, rather than direct, allowing
children to take ownership of their
learning journey.

FOSTERING LIFELONG LEARNERS
The Montessori method is more than just an educational framework—it is a way of nurturing
a child’s natural desire to learn and their innate potential. By focusing on the development of
the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically—the Montessori method
fosters well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life’s challenges and opportunities.
Early childhood is a critical period for laying the foundations of lifelong learning. The
Montessori approach, with its emphasis on self-direction, exploration, and respect for the
child, equips children with the skills and mindset they need to succeed in school and life.
Montessori education encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity while
fostering a deep sense of responsibility and independence.
Dr Maria Montessori herself said, “The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of
responsibility and the wings of independence.” This timeless philosophy inspires educators
and parents alike, helping shape future generations of confident, capable, and curious
learners.
