This is an ammonite fossil. The ammonites
became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous
Period, at roughly the same time that the
dinosaurs disappeared. Ammonites were
closely related to the octopus, squid and
cuttlefish and they get their name from the
Egyptian god, Ammon, who was frequently
depicted wearing rams’ horns. Although
it’s difficult to gauge the size from a photo,
this specimen found in the Cambanos
showroom is roughly the size of a small
