Q: What are the benefits of disc golf?

Bart: Disc golf can be played from the age
of about 10 up to the age of 80 or more,
by both men and women, making it a great
         multi-generational, lifetime fitness activity.
And because disc golf is so easy to learn,
         no one is excluded.
Disc golf provides upper and lower body
         conditioning, aerobic exercise, and mental
         stimulation. Concentration skills increase
         by mastering shots and negotiating
obstacles, and players of limited fitness
levels can start slowly and gradually
         increase their level of play.

It is also a very environmentally-friendly
sport. It does not require manicured lawns
and greens, in fact some of the best
holes are the ones in which the basket is
located is in a small clearing in the woods
surrounded by trees, requiring skill and
imagination to get a good score.
For South Africa, with its economic
         disparities, perhaps the greatest attribute
of the sport is the low barrier to entry.
         A high-quality disc costs roughly $15
(ZAR250), it will last more or less forever,
and only one is required for basic play
(though very likely you will soon find
yourself owning a lot more!). There are
putters, mid-range discs and drivers, just
         like in ball golf.
Best of all, these discs are usually brightly
coloured, so they’re not that easy to lose!

Q: What is the current status of disc golf
         in South Africa?

Bart: We have set up a non-profit
association (Disc Golf South Africa) to
develop the sport and we're actively trying
to raise funds and, in particular, find
venues to establish new courses. This has
         its challenges.

For now, we have established a fantastic
course at the beautiful Inanda Country
Base, at the end of Maple Road in Kyalami,
only 10 minutes’ drive from the estate. This
is a 21-hole, fully basketed course, with
different course layouts suitable for both
beginners and advanced players. A round
         takes about 2 - 2 ½ hours to complete.
         Entrance tickets are available through
         DGSA (me) only.
Q: How can people interested find out
         more?
Bart: Best would be to drop me an email
         at discgolfsouthafrica@gmail.com and I will
gladly provide more info or arrange a demo Bart with an assortment
at the course, or even at the Main Park in of ‘DG’ discs
the estate. Come throw some plastic!
