PROJECT
Design challenges
A significant design challenge was
the fact that the office building was
an existing one, and the structure
wasn’t originally designed
to accommodate the weight
associated with large planters. In
order to add much needed greenery
to the piazza space, the landscaping
team had to work closely with the
architects and engineers to find
a balance between having large
green pockets and adhering to
the structural limitations. Some of
the planters were filled with high
density polystyrene void formers
to reduce weight, and the weight
of the potting soil was further
reduced by adding polystyrene
beads to the mixture.
A visual break between different
restaurant tenants was created with
low level planting in lightweight
steel planters. This added some
greenery and a break in the large
areas of tiled piazza. The planters
were branded to emphasise the
centre’s unique corporate identity.
