arly on Saturday 4 September,
the Cornwall Hill Estate post
box park was a sea of maroon
Spar branded t-shirts. Excited
groups of walkers, some with
dogs, scattered themselves at
Esuitable distances from one
another in line with the you-know-what protocol
as they waited for the start of the annual spring
walk.
Half an hour earlier, the runners had set off
and were just visible coming into the park to
finish their race as the walkers set off on their
five kilometre fun walk. Residents have had the
privilege of being able to join in many spring
walks through the years since the inaugural
walk, organised by Peter Morey. The format of
the spring walk for 2021 was a little bit different
because it was combined with the Spar women’s
virtual challenge.
Every year thousands of women look forward to
taking part in the Spar women’s challenge fun
runs. In 2020, due to lockdown, Spar launched
their first ever virtual challenge. Due to the
continuing restrictions caused by the Covid-19
virus, Spar hosted the second virtual challenge in
2021 as a way for communities to keep coming
together with the challenge theme #LiveLimitless.
The theme calls on participants to recognise how
many obstacles they have overcome despite
restrictions and to get involved in a healthy,
family-friendly activity as the ultimate antidote
to Covid-19 fatigue and the lockdown blues
that many South Africans are experiencing.
Alison Zweers, Spar managing director, urged
participants to take some time for themselves and
reflect on the tenacity they have all shown since
the start of the pandemic. “Take this opportunity
to #LiveLimitless, whatever that means to you,
and do not be defined by the limitations you face.
To #LiveLimitless is about answering the call to
adventure, and instead of being defined by your
limits, changing the narrative to be inspired by
them.”
The event benefits the Spar Petals Project.
