Proceeds from this year’s entry fee will be
used to help the Petals project donate packs
of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls
who often stay away from school when they
are on their periods as they lack these basic
necessities. The donations help keep these
girls in school, giving them an equal chance
to compete and to show them that there is
no area in their lives in which they cannot

The organisation of the event was the
brainchild of resident Lauren Dyason, who
explains: “I saw some advertising about the
Spar virtual challenge and was eager to take
part but wanted to spread the word of this
great cause and event. I wanted to get our
Cornwall community involved and thought
of trying to get a bulk entry for those also
interested. After contacting Celest Van Niekerk,
Peter Morey and Dirk Heyns, they suggested
we combine it with our annual spring walk
and make it double the fun.” She continues by
saying: “Celest, Dirk and Peter were my support
through and through. They helped me bring
this event to life. A big thanks to this awesome
team as well as the security, which ensured the
route was safe at all times.”
Celest, in her role as communications director,
was part of the organising committee that
assisted and supported Lauren to execute
the spring walk. Celest adds: “I am personally
excited that young residents are taking up
initiatives to get the community involved. The
day was a highlight for the estate residents
who took part. Lauren’s passion and energy
rubbed off on us.” Peter Morey, as a seasoned
organiser of previous spring walks and other
events, confirms this, adding that “Lauren just
ran with the event and did a great job.”
Cornwall Hill registered 112 entries from
residents and 40 from Operation Healing Hands
