THE BIG PICTURE
A BIRDING SAFARI AROUND CAPE TOWN
Cape Robin-Chat / Afr. Gewone Janfrederik.
Signal Hill. National Botanical Garden
A striking bird, about the size of a sparrow, with a bright orange
breast and a black mask, the Cape Robin-Chat is a popular
garden bird, found all over the country. It is often seen hopping
around on the ground or perched on a fence post. Primarily an
insectivore, it also consumes fruit and nectar. It builds a cup-
shaped nest in a tree or shrub, and both parents share the
responsibilities of nest building, incubation, and feeding the
young. Known for its distinctive call, a loud, ringing "churr".
